Big 'Worms'.

Is it possible that the military presence in Sunnydale was some sort of research installation? Only my sources have unearthed an interesting tale from an inmate, Earl Bassett, who was transferred from California State Prison, Corcoran to Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility at Rock Mountain as a result of his distressed psychological state which analysts at the Corcoran facility had attributed to a pathological distrust of the area of the State of California to the East of the Sierra Nevadas.

Mr Bassett was incarcerated under the three strike law for repeated petty crimes while living a hand to mouth existance in the Quincy/Westwood area in the mountains to the East of Sacramento.

Psychologists working for the Californian Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation have recorded a number of conversations with Mr Bassett in which he recounts a consistant tale of how he and an associate, one Valentine McKee were working as labourers in a small town called Perfection, CA, in the late 80's early 90's and came across some hitherto unrecorded giant wormlike animal that burrowed underneath the ground and was able to swallow cars whole and demolish buildings. Apparently the two of them, along with a number of townsfolk including a seismologist called Rhonda LeBeck were able to escape the area.

Since then he has apparently refused to live away from the mountains and, as mentioned, was severely distressed when incarcerated in Corcoran. Since being moved to Rock Mountain he has become a much more docile detainee.

Further investigations in to Perfection, CA have come up blank, it seems a town of that name did exist around 30 miles to the east of Olancha, CA, but it was never that sizeable and records suggest was abandoned some 15 years ago. No structures can be found in the location it was believed to inhabit and oddly this location shows significant evidence of major subsidence.

Valentine McKee and Rhonda LeBeck are both listed as having left the United States for Bolivia in the early half of the 1990's and no further record of them has been uncovered since that point.

While it is a long shot that this inmates story has any degree of validity, the inability to disprove it make me wonder if it might have some bearing on the happenings in Sunnydale a decade or so later. I wonder, are there records of any large worm or snake sightings in that area in the period leading up to the collapse?

Oh boy, was there.

Numerous survivors of the Sunnydale HS explosion of 1999 claimed at first to have seen a "giant snake" attack the school just after the Sunnydale Darkness started. One witness said it burst through the ground just at Mayor Wilkins' feet and ate him on the way up (which would explain why no body was ever recovered).

Of course, this was the same incident where numerous people claim to have been attacked by vampires during the panic, so I never gave the stories any credence.

Looking for giant snakes or worms in 2002-2003, I only find oblique reference to a woman who left Sunnydale well before the general exodus began. Apparently, she had too much to drink at a party and started claiming that her dog was eaten by a giant worm. Later she took it back and said that her ex-boyfriend killed the dog. I was unable to trace the source of this rumor.

Quite frankly, I still don't believe it. For one thing, it's entirely unverified, and it isn't consistent with stuff there's actually some evidence for -- the history of Faith Lehane, for instance, and the apparent link to the Sunnydale and LA Darkness incidents. Not to mention that the final destruction of Sunnydale seems to have been anticipated.

Military "black projects" are one thing, and I think we're all agreed that something of the kind was going on there. But giant worms is a whole new level of bizarre, and that's a step that I for one am unwilling to take until driven there by evidence.

Although, now that I think about it, there do seem to be a lot of snake-related incidents in Sunnydale's colorful history. Wasn't there something about a plague of serpents in the high school cafeteria, allegedly due to a backed up sewer line? There was the Mayor-eating snake in '99, of course, and I seem to recall another big snake incident one night in late 1999 or early 2000 -- and come to think of it, there was another freak earthquake in late spring 2000.

Still not believing your giant worms, but that many snake incidents may point to something in itself.

I heard a similar story about a Perfection, Nevada. Rumor had it a survivalist named Burt Gummer was hunting the things up until just a few months before the Sunnydale Collapse. Anyone heard anything about this?

Survivalists will say just about anything. How many of them hunkered down on December 31, 1999, and then felt really foolish on January 1st?

There was a bit of hype on the net about Perfection, which leads me to believe that the whole thing was intended as a tourist attraction.

The apparent disappearance of the town is suggestive, but the whole thing smells fishy to me.

I understand that there is some connection between Valentine McKee and several (if not all) of the survivors on The Bus. However, the degrees of separation are unknown at this time.
