Hello my fellows!

I came to alt.conspiracy.sunnydale via their connection with alt.conspiracy.wolframandhart and alt.conspiracy.jasmine.

I first heard the news about Winifred "Fred" Burkle when I transferred from UCSF to UCLA because of the greater Applications of Computers in everyday life that were available from UCLA. I had to retake a lower level physics course because for some reason third semester physics didn't transfer between UCSF and UCLA. The professor, Dr. Seidel, mentioned in a joking manner to not work for Stewart Brunell Public Library since it had led to the recent disappearance of a promising freshman student, Winifred "Fred" Burkle from Texas. He made some other comments about those of us with promising careers in physics should of course, get on his good side.

Being inquisitive I looked into Fred Burkle's disappearance. Not much was known about it. She'd apparently clocked in for work that afternoon, and had been seen with a book cart, obviously intent on re-shelving books. But she never clocked back out, and her superior at the library reported that discrepancy on the time report for the day. But she didn't show up for her second semester Calculus midterm the following day, nor did she return to work.

I found it intriguing to note that there were rumors already in the physics department that Fred had obviously gotten on Seidel's bad side and he'd "made an example of her". Of course, I also heard that it was a result of the star-alignment in proportion to the moon and the recent acquisition of the Humanities Department of a rare purple scarab mural from the Dynastic period of Pharaoh Ramses IX... and someone swearing in Pig Latin. Of course my favorite was that Fred had been kidnapped by a rogue US Government team that were intent on breeding a perfect being, and wanted Fred's brilliant mind for their work.

After leaving that semester of physics, and therefore the department behind me in pursuit of my degree I put all such research in the back of my mind. So, imagine my surprise when in May of 2003 I found an announcement in the L.A. Times business section about the new board of directors of Wolfram & Hart, and spotted a picture of Fred Burkle. I believe my first thought on seeing her in the picture was... "Jumping Jesus on a Pogostick!" I mean here was a girl who'd gone missing in 1996 and she was suddenly RUNNING a Practical Science Division of a major corporation? How did she get the job? I looked, and the L.A. Times never did announce her degree, or where it was from, merely that she was "imminently qualified to hold the position".

So, what do the rest of you make of this? How can a woman who went missing, wasn't heard from in years (to the best of my limited tracking skills), never graduated university, suddenly hold such a prestigious title and job?

Given the known connections between Wolfram and Hart and the Bush administration my guess would be that she "vanished" into the intelligence community - possibly completing her education as a "student" in another country while spying on it for her controllers - then for some reason returned to civilian life. Perhaps her cover was inadvertently blown, or she did something to further the goals of the military-industrial complex; to ensure her continued loyalty and silence she would be rewarded, and an obvious reward for a dedicated scientist is a high-prestige scientific post.

Winifred Burkle's reappearance wasn't as sudden as many people make out. Prior to being named the head of W&H's practical science division in 2003 she had published an article in the November 2002 Modern Physics Review titled "Supersymmetry and P-Dimensional Subspace." (pg 19.) She also presented the article at the UCLA Physics Institute (though there was apparently some sort disturbance that interrupted her presentation, forcing the auditorium to be cleared. Pranksters from UCS were blamed for it.)

Interesting title. Any chance the disturbance was arranged by someone who didn't want her ideas spread too far? Really makes you wonder where she spent her missing years, and what she was working on while she was there.

It occurs to me that if she published an article, the Modern Physics Review must have had contact information for her. Any chance we can find out where she was living when the article was submitted?

It would have been rather pointless. The disturbance had the exact opposite effect. Modern Physics Review doesn't have the same sort of circulation as, say People, but every university with a physics department has a subscription, and because of that disturbance, Ms Burkle's article became pretty much the most photocopied article in the magazine's history.

The article itself consisted of mostly very obscure mathematics. No need to "supress" it, there are maybe a dozen people in the world who are capable of really understanding it. (I ain't one of them.) It was also the sort of thing that doesn't require any sort of fancy institution with expensive computers, or expermental setups. It was the sort of thing that required a piece of chalk, and a blackboard (or a pencil and note pad, or white walls and a piece of charcoal.)

Okay...but my second question stands. Modern Physics Review must have records of her mailing address prior to her appointment at W&H. That might tell us what she was doing after her return but before the appointment. Does anyone here have a way to get at those records?

No need to go digging through MPR's records. You just need to take a look in a copy of the 2002 L.A. phone book:

Burkle, W 206-1210 Hyperion Ave, Los Angeles CA.

Holy Cow. That's the Hyperion Hotel.

I came across it while googling for stuff about the high death rate in Sunnydale. Throughout the history of the Hyperion, there was a suspiciously high rate of suicide and murder among tenants and staff alike.

It was abandoned in...I think 1974? And it stood empty until late 2000, when it was acquired by, of all things, a detective agency, and used as their headquarters. It was never reopened as a hotel, although the agency's staff probably lived in the rooms. And so did our Ms. Burkle?

As they say, innnteresting.

Just looked it up. The agency was called Angel Investigations. And googling that has turned up all kinds of hits on the conspiracy boards. I haven't even had time to more than glance at it, but there seems to be a lot.

'Fred Burkle' isn't the only connection between Angel Investigations and Wolfram and Hart. I looked up previous addresses for several Wolfram and Hart employees, and a few also apparently lived at the Hyperion Hotel during the time Ms. Burkle did. Namely Wesley Wyndom-Pryce and one of their top attorneys, Charles Gunn. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Especially since the only references I can find to their newest CEO are very vague, and never mentions his name. So who is he, and why is it such a big secret?

Maybe it's Jonathan Levinson...

Seriously, though, there seems to be no official listing for Angel Investigations. It's as if they had no legal existence. That's a pretty thorough coverup.

Lots of "fringe" sites mention them, though. According to some of them, Wyndom-Pryce, Gunn, and "Fred" Burkle were all employed by the agency. Another listed employee was Cordelia Chase, who apparently moved to LA to become an actress, with little success, and began working as AI's bookkeeper, secretary and receptionist.

Two things stand out about Chase: She was born and raised in Sunnydale, and was part of the graduating class of 1999. And she never moved to Wolfram and Hart, since she apparently fell into a coma just a day or so before the Sunnydale Collapse.

Right away, that's two things linking her to Faith Lehane (see the "Sunnydale link to the L.A. Darkness" thread).

Chase died in early 2004, having never awoken.

I think I need to pull some of this together in a new thread.

Hi, I was pointed in the direction of you guys as people who would be able to help.

I'm looking into the disappearance of Dr. Seidel around the time of the Fred Burkle presentation. I believe the disturbance of her presentation and Dr. Seidel's vanishing are linked, and also the disappearance of several other students of Dr Seidel.

I've spoken to the families of the other students, and all of them were incredibly promising students that Dr Seidel had taken under his wing. I think it's obvious that what ever caused the disappearance of his students, finally caught up with Dr Seidel, and it can't be a coincident that it happened with the reappearance of Fred Burkle. Maybe something she said clued Dr Seidel into what was happening and he need to be removed? And why was Fred the only one to reappear?

Any thoughts?

Somewhat in connection to the theory of [livejournal.com profile] ffutures above, my current belief is that Dr. Seidel was a recruiting agent for an anti-government agency intent on overthrowing the current leadership of the United States. His status and position allowed him access to some of the brightest minds of the generation and presented him in a mentor role that allowed him to gain their trust.

Once recruited, the students are sent to continue their training where the system cannot control the curriculum. The reappearance of Winifred Burkle in such a high position of power leads me to believe Wolfram and Hart may also be involved in the conspiracy.

As for Dr. Seidel's disappearance, it is possible that the intelligence community discovered his connection to anti-US groups and removed him, or that he has gone into hiding to train those he has already recruited.

This is a puzzling situation but how are we to trust your facts. I know that I could just look through some old newspaper clippings or Internet research, but your story of how you heard of Fred's disappearance is fishy. You say that you went to UCSF, a graduate school for medicine, to get your Computing Degree. Why would anyone who got into graduate school need to retake a lower division physics class?
